In a sentence, a phrase depends upon its structure and place. A Phrase can act like noun, preposition, adjective, and adverb. Phrases and idioms are English ornaments. To understand English Idioms well, and to use them properly, it’s important. In Idioms, the literary meaning is not found in the meaning of the word, therefore it must be mastered by memorizing them

Noun Phrase

In a sentence when a Phrase act or work like a noun is called a Noun Phrase. Noun Phrase contains a noun and other words like modifiers.

Structure: noun + modifiers

Noun Phrase Example

He is a man of letters. (As noun: object)

Here a man of letters is a Phrase which is working on the noun as an object.

He is late as usual. (As noun: object)

The anti-socials are still at large. (As noun: object)

All the magazine in the room were at sixes and sevens. (As noun: object)

He works by fits and starts. (As noun: object)

The thief was caught red-handed. (As noun: object)

Flesh and blood cannot bear with such insults. (As a noun: subject)

Verbal Phrase

In a sentence when a Phrase act or work like a verb then it is called Verbal Phrase.

When one or more words are combined and work as a verb is called a verbal phrase.

Verbal Phrase Example

He gave up smoking.

He looks forward to looking at me.

He looks after me.

He passed himself off as a nobleman.

Mr. Akash deals in diamonds.

He went back on his promise to vote for the candidate.

The old man breathed his last on Friday last.

Our school team came off with flying colors.

Adjective Phrase

A Phrase which qualifies noun or pronoun is called Adjective Phrase that is it modify noun or pronoun.

Or,

In a sentence when a Phrase act or work like an adjective is called Adjective Phrase.

Structure: Preposition + Noun

Ways to know

Generally, Adjective Phrase is available when asked with Which, Which kind, which type, etc.

Adjective Phrase Example

It is a ring of gold.

Here of gold qualify or modify the ring. So it is an Adjective Phrase.

The man with long hair has seen me.

The village in front of the rail station is big.

Give me this pen in lieu of that book.

Adverbial Phrase

The Phrase that works with Adverb means that, without Noun or Pronoun, qualifying parts of speech, they are called Adverbial Phrase. Or,

When a Phrase act or work like an adverb in a sentence then it is called Adverbial Phrase.

Structure: In the case of the preposition in this case: Preposition + Noun.

Ways to know: How, Where, When, etc.

Adverbial Phrase Example

He tired heart and soul to get the job. (How?)

He sat under the tree. (Where?)

He left in time. (When?)

He fought tooth and nail against his enemy. (How?)

NB:

Although the Structure of Adjective and Adverbial Phrase is the same, their Function is different and there is a Noun or Pronoun before Adjective Phrase, but other parts of speech before Adverbial Phrase.

Prepositional Phrase

When a Phrase act or works like a preposition in a sentence then it is called Prepositional Phrase.

Preposition Phrase usually starts with the preposition and the preposition is ending.

Prepositional Phrase Examples

The man sat in front of his house.

He could not come because of weakness. (By + cause + of)

He came here in order to meet my brother.

Give me your book in lieu of my note.

He shouted at the top of his voice.

He won the prize by dint of hard work.

He got the prize by means of his hard work.

In consequence of fire, call the Fire Brigade.

They went to the forest in search of deer.

He is working in place of my brother.

He is in the midst of great troubles.

He told me this in course of conversation.

The police arrived in the nick of time.

He went on working in the teeth of strong.

He did this in accordance with her request.

I could not attend school on account of my illness.

The principal welcomed the visitors on behalf of the college.

He was given farewell on the eve of his retirement.

He did this with an eye to helping his brother.

He did this with a view to helping his sister.

After several hours we located the key for the door

Here After is preposition and hours is the object of the preposition.

Also for is preposition and door is the object of the preposition.

Interjectional Phrase

If Phrase expresses harsh, emotion, joy, grief, etc. then it is called Interjectional Phrase.

Interjectional Phrase Example

What a pity!

Oh my god!

Oh! What a nice scenery.

Wow! Never saw that.

Well, so he got a chance!

Conjunctional Phrase

The phrase that combines multiple clauses or sentences is called a conjunctional phrase.

Conjunctional Phrase Example

He came as soon as I left.

He neither finished his home task nor studied for the test.

They went out because the sun was shining.
