Difference between RAM and ROM

What Is The Difference Between RAM and ROM

In the computer, there have many components for specific work. From them, the hard drive is the primary storage device which used to save all the necessary data like system applications, files, music, videos and many more. Actually, you can get here what is the difference between RAM and ROM?

Besides the hard drive, on the computer, we also have RAM (Random Access Memory) and ROM (Read-only Memory).in below differences between RAM and ROM has discussed in details.

There are many differences between RAM (random access memory) and ROM (read-only memory)

One (ROM) is able to hold memory without power and another one (RAM) need the power to store memory.

Generally, ROM is for store memory for permanently and RAM is for temporary storage.

What is a RAM (Random Access Memory)?

Random Access Memory (RAM): biggest kind of storage medium after the magnetic hard drive or SSD exists in the computer hardware, which is volatile means it can store information and retain the information with the continuous use of power from a constant source.

It is used to store the programs and data being used by the computers CPU in real time. Data on the ram can be read written and be erased in any given time. Data can simply be evaporated if the power is gone. For this reason, it is not used as a source for permanent data storage system but it is used for real-time data processing for its faster speed of data processing.

Types of RAM

It is mainly two types. They are

  • Dynamic RAM
  • Static RAM

Dynamic RAM (DRAM): it uses a pair of transistor and capacitor which constitute a DRAM memory cell to store a bit of data.

Static RAM (SRAM): SRAM stores a bit of data by using the state of a six transistor memory cell and it is faster and costlier than DRAM.

What is ROM (Read-only Memory)?

Read-Only Memory (ROM): a nonvolatile storage chip which needs a continuous power supply and loses the information which it processed when the power is off or unavailable. It is developed to support erasing and rewriting of data, but it doesn’t achieve the efficiency level compare to random access memory (RAM).

Read-only memory (ROM) types:

  • Mask ROM
  • PROM
  • EPROM
  • EEPROM

Mask ROM: it is a type of ROM where data are written during the manufacturing of the memory chip.

Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM): After the memory chip has been created, the data is written. It is nonvolatile.

Erasable Programmable Read-only Memory (EPROM): by exposing this non-volatile memory chip to high-intensity UV light data can be erased.

Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM): Data on this non-volatile memory chip can be erased electrically by using field electron emission (also known as Fowler-Nordheim tunneling).considering the read-write capabilities modern EEPROMs are far more efficient than the others.

Memory chip which is mentioned above types is semiconductor-based ROMs. There also have optical storage media like CD-ROM which also a form of read-only memory.

Difference between ROM and RAM

In computer, RAM chip is used primarily in the process of startup. In the other hand, RAM chip is used in the normal operation of the computer when the operating system loaded.

What is the difference between RAM and ROM?

A RAM chip can store multiple gigabytes (GB) of data ranging from 1 to 256 GB per chip.

A ROM stores a less amount of data compares to the RAM, Usually 64Mega bytes (MB) to 4 gigabytes (GB) per chip.

Computer ROM

Computers BIOS is an idle example for ROM which stores the needed programming for beginners the initial startup of the computer which is a prom type chip. Computers and other devices have only one type of storage medium which is non-volatile.

ROM chips are also used in different gaming system cartridges. For example, some of them are original Nintendo, Game Boy, Sega Genesis and many more.

Computer RAM

Chips like RAM are not only used in computers but also other devices to store the information which is produced quickly by the programs. RAM is the fastest type of memory compared to other types which are allowed to switch quickly between tasks. For example, when a browser used to browse the internet to read the newspaper or any websites blog is loaded in RAM and running from it.

RAM vs. differencesRAMROM
DataData is not permanent and can be manipulated or simply erased in any time if the power is cut offData is not permanent and can be manipulated or simply erased in any time if the power is cut off
speedThis memory is a high speed memoryIt is a much slower type memory compare to RAM
CPU InteractionCentral processing unit can access the data as the data stored on itCPU has no access to it. To access in this data, firstly needs to copy the data to the RAM.
Size and CapacityIt is larger in size with higher capacitysmaller size with less capacity
UsagePrimary memory (i.e. DRAM,DIMM modules),CPU cache(SRAM)
Costvery much costlierMuch cheaper the RAM

Final verdict,

Everything has its pros and cons. same goes for RAM and ROM. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. In one side RAM is costlier and holds a big amount of data and process at a very fast speed but any time the data can be erased if the power is unavailable.

On the other side, ROM is cheaper than the RAM but holds a less amount of data for permanently with slower processing speed. Hope you are capable now to understand the difference. If you have any query then comment us.

  1. This design is wicked! You obviously know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Fantastic job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

Yesterday, while I was at work, my cousin stole my iPhone and tested to see if it can survive a twenty-five-foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My apple iPad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know this is completely off topic but I had to share it with someone!|

Wow, superb blog layout! How long have you been blogging for? you make blogging look easy. The overall look of your site is magnificent, as well as the content! xrumer

  4. One other issue issue is that video games are generally serious as the name indicated with the primary focus on finding out rather than entertainment. Although, it comes with an entertainment factor to keep your children engaged, each game is generally designed to focus on a specific experience or program, such as numbers or scientific research. Thanks for your publication.

Fantastic post but I was wondering if you could write a litte more on this subject? I’d be very grateful if you could elaborate a little bit further. Thank you!
